Knee Injections

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a condition that typically develops in men and women over the age of 50. Since it’s a progressive disease, it can make it more difficult to move your knee as time goes on. It can also cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms including swelling, stiffness, and mobility problems.

If you are living with osteoarthritis of the knee, your doctor will likely begin by prescribing medications, physical therapy, exercise, and recommending certain lifestyle modifications. In the event these treatments prove to be ineffective, knee injections may be an option. Let’s dive deeper into what knee injections are and how you may benefit from them.

What Happens During a Knee Injection?

During a knee injection, your doctor will thoroughly clean the skin on your knee and treat it with a local anesthetic. Then, they’ll insert a needle into your joint and cause you to feel a bit of pressure or discomfort. Next, the doctor will inject the medication into your knee. Once the injection has been made, a bandage will be placed over the injection site and you’ll be free to resume work and your daily activities.

When Do Results Occur?

The effects of knee injections typically take anywhere between 24 and 48 hours to work. If you notice a slight increase in pain for the first few days after your injections, rest assured that this completely normal. After this, you should experience some noticeable relief. While the relief that knee injections bring is only temporary, you can enjoy results for anywhere from six to twelve weeks.

Repeat injections may be performed if your doctor recommends them. However, since knee injections are not designed for extended use, you should limit them to three or does per year.

Side Effects of Knee Injections

Joint swelling and pain are the most common potential side effects of knee injections. If you have skin or joint infections, you should stay away from this treatment.

Knee Injections are Not a Quick Fix

It’s important to understand that knee injections are not a “quick fix” for knee osteoarthritis or pain. Instead, they are intended to offer extended relief from the pain and discomfort osteoarthritis can bring. Knee injections will likely be paired with other treatments.
