5 Back Pain Relief Tips

While some people suffer from back pain for a few weeks, others face chronic back pain that lasts for more than three months. Although the cause of back pain varies from person to person, it’s usually the result of the natural process of aging, conditions like osteoarthritis or osteoporosis, muscle strains, or ruptured discs. Regardless of the cause of your back pain, you may be able to find some relief by doing the following:

1. Exercise Regularly

Many people with back pain make the mistake of avoiding exercise because they believe it will worsen rather than improve their pain. The reality is that regular exercise can strengthen your back muscles and alleviate your pain. We recommend walking, using the elliptical or cycling and discourage heavy weights and jumping as they may aggravate your back pain.

2. Quit Smoking

Believe it or not, smoking can lead to back pain. While smoking is easier said than done, it’s well worth the effort if your goal is to find relief. Fortunately, there are a number of resources out there that can help you ditch this bad habit once and for all. Consider trying patches, gums, and support groups.

3. Make Lifestyle Modifications

There are a number of quick and easy modifications you can make to improve your back pain. When you are driving, adjust your seat height so that your knees are a little bent and your back is supported by the seat. Also, if your job requires you to sit for long periods of time, be sure to always touch the floor with your feet.

4. Maintain a Healthy Weight

One of the keys to managing your back pain is maintaining a healthy weight. This may involve eating healthy and working out regularly. Stay away from processed foods and eat more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Also, join a gym or take up a sport so that you are motivated to workout regularly.

5. Focus on Good Posture

Poor posture can contribute to back pain. Focus on good posture by getting into the habit of standing up straight with your ears over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips, and your hips over your ankles.
